Abstract
The section on leadership and direction describes the creation of alternative defense counsel, the Judicial Branch's examination of the treatment of children, the Colorado Integrated Criminal Justice Information System, and the State Supreme Court's enhancement of automated legal research. Data for appellate courts address the number of cases disposed of by opinion for the Supreme Court for fiscal years 1995 and 1996 and the distribution of case filings for the Colorado Court of Appeals for fiscal years 1995 and 1996. Data on trial courts consist of the number of filings for district courts and county courts for fiscal years 1995 and 1996. The description of Judicial Branch activities in the area of public safety focus on the reaffirmation of probation priorities, the expansion of the Probation Advisory Committee, the Domestic Violence Project's enhancement of the integration of probation services, and the cooperative efforts fostered by multiagency collaboration. The section on professionalism and training describes efforts to improve training for court personnel. Efforts to improve equality and fairness focused on the establishment of a Multicultural Commission, progress by the Supreme Court's Gender and Justice Committee, judicial employee issues, and probation employee issues. Budget allocation, the Commission on Judicial Performance, and the Commission on Judicial Discipline are discussed in the section on accountability. Remaining sections of the report provide data and descriptions of court actions with respect to restitution for victims, improved operations, and service to the public.
