ARTICLES DEALING WITH CRIME AGAINST SMALL BUSINESSES AND MEANS OF REDUCING THE RESULTING LOSSES.
Abstract
THE SMALL BUSINESSMAN, MERCHANT, OR SHOPKEEPER IS STOLEN FROM, VICTIMIZED, AND CONSTANTLY SUBJECT TO HAVING HIS PROPERTY DESTROYED AND VANDALIZED, BY BOTH INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL SOURCES. COUNTLESS BUSINESSES HAVE BEEN FORCED TO CLOSE BECAUSE OF PROPERTY LOSSES WHICH WERE NOT OR COULD NOT BE CONTROLLED. AN OVERVIEW IS GIVEN ON THE PROBLEM OF SMALL BUSINESS LOSSES, AS WELL AS A PHILOSOPHICAL RATIONALE FOR OWNER-MANAGER INVOLVEMENT IN LOSS PREVENTION. SPECIFIC PROCEDURES AND TECHNIQUES ARE SUGGESTED FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROGRAMS TO REDUCE OR ELIMINATE THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMMIT ALL MAJOR TYPES OF CRIMES AGAINST SMALL BUSINESSES. INCLUDED ARE CHAPTERS ON PROPER MANAGEMENT FOR CRIME PREVENTION, COMBATTING THEFT BY INSIDERS, AND REDUCING SHOPLIFTING LOSSES. THE BOOK INCLUDES A SUMMARY OF A STUDY DONE BY THE UNITED STATES SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION RELATING TO LOSSES BY SMALL BUSINESSES ALONG WITH THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CURTAILING SUCH LOSSES. WRITTEN FROM A MANAGEMENT VIEWPOINT, THIS WORK WILL PROVIDE VALUABLE ASSISTANCE TO THOSE WHO ARE PLANNING MEASURES FOR THE REDUCTION OF CRIME AGAINST THE SMALL INDEPENDENT BUSINESSMAN.
