This article examines ongoing efforts in the prevention of traffic-related injuries and deaths due to impaired driving.
Abstract
In 2007, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found a substantial decline in the number of drinking drivers with a blood alcohol content of .08 g/dL or greater on weekend nights, representing a decline of 71 percent in alcohol-impaired drivers on weekend nights. However, even though alcohol-impaired drivers have declined, drug-impaired drivers are on the rise. Today, NHTSA and other groups are attempting to understand the role of drugs in traffic safety. In doing so, efforts to reduce drug- and alcohol-related crashes continue. This article reviews these efforts with the following impaired driving enforcement training curriculums: Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, the Drug Evaluation and Classification (DEC) Program, Drug Impairment for Educational Professionals, Protecting Lives, Saving Futures, Prosecuting the Drugged Driver, and Lethal Weapon DUI Vehicular Homicide. 13 notes
