This article discusses cooperation among law enforcement agencies and anti-drug abuse education for the public as weapons in the battle against the illegal narcotics trade.
Abstract
The smuggling of illegal drugs is a multi-billion-dollar, multi-national business. Law enforcement in the United States has countered with a multi-agency action that includes Federal, State and local organizations that patrol the borders and work in both the source countries and the United States. This cooperative effort gives law enforcement a good chance to stop drug smuggling activities. The key to stopping the use of illegal drugs within the United States is anti-drug education; if there is no demand, there will be no supply. The article describes the many ways smugglers get drugs into this country and some of the interdiction strategies of US law enforcement agencies. The article emphasizes the need for cooperation and communication, both within and among the various law enforcement agencies involved in anti-smuggling activities.
