This article discusses the development of measures for assessing violence against disabled and deaf women, the Safer and Stronger Program (SSP), and provides direction for further development of standard assessment tools.
Abstract
The Safer and Stronger Program (SSP) advances the development of a valid and reliable assessment tool that covers a wide range of disability-specific abuses and different perpetrator risk characteristics. This work provides a foundation from which researchers can refine and improve their SSP items and further test and increase the validity and reliability of SSP. Future research should focus upon the amount, or repeated nature of abuse, the specific types of abuse encountered by respondents, and the specific category of fear of abuse. Further research into the perpetrators of abuse against disabled and deaf women is also recommended, to define the relationship of perpetrators, or whether multiple perpetrators are involved in incidents of abuse.
