A critique of Franke's 1992 article on solitary confinement and historical aspects of long-term penal changes is presented.
Abstract
According to the critique, Franke makes unfounded assumptions with respect to imprisonment and presents a stereotypical picture of early modern punishment and discipline. In addition, the critique indicates that Franke's discussion of the "internal dynamic of the civilizing process" is unclear, particularly in the context of the apparent interdependence of cultural and social developments. The critique identifies specific disagreements with Franke's article that focus on the long-term character of penal changes, the use of imprisonment, penal developments in Europe and the United States, and what constitutes solitary confinement. 6 references
