RESULTS OF A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY TO DETERMINE THE POTENTIAL ROLE OF ALARM SYSTEMS IN RESIDENCES AND SMALL BUSINESSES AND TO RECOMMEND SYSTEMS AND PROCEDURES FOR COST-EFFECTIVE PROTECTION FOR THIS CLASS OF USERS.
Abstract
THE USER AND POTENTIAL USER, THE THREAT, AND AVAILABLE EQUIPMENTS WERE ANALYZED TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ALARM SYSTEMS AND TO IDENTIFY PROBLEM AREAS AND RECOMMEND SOLUTIONS. IN GENERAL, THE THREAT WAS FOUND TO BE RELATIVELY UNSOPHISTICATED, AND SIMPLE ALARM SYSTEMS CAN BE CONFIGURED TO EFFECTIVELY DEAL WITH THE THREAT. PRIMARY PROBLEM AREAS IDENTIFIED WERE THE ALARM SYSTEM/ HUMAN INTERFACE AND THE LACK OF CERTAIN TECHNICALLYFEASIBLE SYSTEM COMPONENTS WHICH WILL HAVE A STRONG IMPACT ON INSTALLATION COSTS AND SYSTEM FLEXIBILITY. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR REDUCING EQUIPMENT AND INSTALLATION COSTS AND FOR AVOIDING USER CAUSED FALSE ALARMS AND MISAPPLICATION OF EQUIPMENT. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
