Abstract
THE FIRST AREA ADDRESSED IS BURGLARY - THE 'OPEN DOOR' POLICY IS NOT RECOMMENDED. DOOR AND WINDOW SECURITY, ADEQUATE LIGHTING AND ALARM SYSTEMS, AND DEBRIS-FREE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR PREMISES ARE MANDATORY. IF ROBBED, A GOOD DESCRIPTION OF THE ROBBER IS ESSENTIAL. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT NOT TO REVEAL LARGE LOSSES OR OPERATING METHODS IN NEWSPAPER ACCOUNTS OF THE ROBBERY - THEY MIGHT BE CONSTRUED AS AN INVITATION TO ROB. SHOPLIFTING PRECAUTIONS INCLUDE PERSONALIZED ATTENTION TO CUSTOMERS, SURVEILLANCE OF FITTING ROOMS AND ISOLATED AREAS, PROPER MERCHANDISE DISPLAY PROCEDURES, AND A CONSISTENT POLICY OF PROSECUTING SHOPLIFTERS. GOOD MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ARE THE BEST WAY TO FORESTALL EMPLOYEE THEFT. THESE INCLUDE THROUGH CHECKS OF THE REFERENCES OF NEW EMPLOYEES, SPOT CHECKS OF EMPLOYEES' WORK, THE MAINTENANCE OF CLEAR LINES OF AUTHORITY, AND FAIR PAY RATES. OVERALL THEFT PREVENTION CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY HAVING AN OUTSIDE SECURITY APPRAISAL, ELIMINATING OPPORTUNITIES BY INCREASING THE RISK, USING GOOD SECURITY HARDWARE AND ALARM SYSTEMS, LIMITING THE TIME A THIEF CAN WORK UNDETECTED, REDUCING THE VALUE OF THE POTENTIAL THEFT, JOINING OPERATION IDENTIFICATION, AND RESEARCHING ADDITIONAL SECURITY MEASURES.
