Abstract
Matters calling for action or attention by the Economic and Social Council pertain to the draft resolutions to be recommended by the Economic and Social Council for adoption by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. Also considered were draft resolutions for adoption by the Economic and Social Council. Among these were UN standards and norms for crime prevention, the strengthening of the rule of law and the criminal justice systems in Africa, the strengthening of basic principles of judicial conduct, international cooperation in the fight against corruption of public officials, and strengthening international cooperation in preventing and combating trafficking in persons and protecting victims of such trafficking. Also covered in this report is the work of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. The Commission discussed maximizing the effectiveness of technical assistance to UN member states in crime prevention and criminal justice. Attention was given to strengthening international cooperation and technical assistance in preventing and combating terrorism. Other issues addressed in the session were the use and application of UN standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice and the provisional agenda for the 16th session of the Commission. Fifteen appendixes pertain to financial statements on various draft resolutions, a list of documents before the Commission at its 15th session, and a draft provisional agenda for the 16th session of the Commission proposed by the United States.
