This report documents the activities of the 17th session (November 30, 2007, and April 14-18, 2008) of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
Abstract
The first section of the report presents matters calling for action by the Council or brought to its attention. These include preparations for the 12th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal justice, draft resolutions and draft decisions for adoption by the Council, and matters brought to the attention of the Council. The report’s second section addresses deliberations, a workshop, and action taken by the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice regarding aspects of violence against women that pertain directly to the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The third section of the report focuses on deliberations and Commission action regarding world crime trends and responses, specifically the integration and coordination of efforts by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and by member states in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. The report’s fourth section addresses deliberations and Commission action on United Nations congresses on crime prevention and criminal justice. The fifth section pertains to deliberations and Commission action on the use and application of United Nations standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice. Another section pertains to policy directives for the crime program of the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime and the role of the Commission as its governing body. The report’s remaining three sections focus on the provisional agenda for the 18th session of the Commission, adoption of the Commission report on its 17th session, and organization of the session.
