The California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) was established to raise the level of competence of local law enforcement officers and to improve the administration, operation, and management of local law enforcement agencies.
Abstract
This annual report focuses on POST accomplishments during the 1980's and goals for the coming decade. The report emphasizes the growth of POST training courses and aid to local law enforcement agencies during the 1980's. Recruitment and selection standards, which include reading and writing, physical, and psychological abilities, are outlined. POST has pioneered the establishment of job-related, performance-based basic training for peace officers that include the use of professionally developed classroom tests and scenario testing. Experiential learning and other instructional technologies have been used to enhance POST training courses. POST has also worked to improve cultural awareness and communication. New technologies such as interactive training, telecourse training, and simulators are being incorporated into the POST program. The Command College and Supervisory Leadership Institute provide advanced management and executive training. New programs for the 1990's include arrest and firearms training, a public safety dispatcher program, and the POST Institute of Criminal Investigation.
