This study examined the prevalence and correlates of suicidal ideation and physical assault among male and female college students in Hong Kong.
Abstract
Results indicated that 55 percent of persons reporting suicidal ideation had a history of violence while 39 percent of violent persons had a history of suicidal ideation. While suicidal ideation had no direct, significant relationship to physical and sexual assault, they shared common associated factors that are important for the development of suicide prevention. Seven risk factors were identified as having significantly higher odds of physical assault and suicidal ideation: antisocial personality, borderline personality, criminal history, gender hostility, posttraumatic stress symptoms, social integration, and age. Furthermore, neglect history and stressful conditions were common factors of male perpetration of assault and suicidal ideation while sexual abuse history was common to female perpetration of assault and suicidal ideation. Practitioners who deal with either violence or suicide cases need to be aware of the possible co-existence of the two problems. Future research should focus on the development of prevention and intervention programming for individuals with a tendency for self-harm or depression with a history of intimate partner violence. Participants were 651 undergraduate college students in Hong Kong who completed a series of questionnaires measuring intimate partner violence, demographic and personal characteristics, suicidal ideation, self-harm, and criminal history. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression models were used to analyze the data. Tables, references
