This directory was developed as a guide to the array of programs in Virginia that contribute to youth violence prevention.
Abstract
For the purposes of this directory, "youth" is defined as ages 5-18; however, there are some violence prevention programs in the directory that target youth over the age of 18. "Violence" is defined as illegal behavior that threatens, attempts, or completes infliction of physical, social, and/or psychological harm, which may or may not be intentional. "Violence prevention" is defined as providing life skills for avoiding and/or resolving conflict in nonviolent ways. Some 64 programs are listed. They focus on developing relevant life skills in individuals, families, and communities rather than attempting to address negative behaviors and conditions. They are often family-focused and neighborhood-based. Funding support comes from a variety of sources. The information for each entry contains the name and address of the program/organization, the name of the program coordinator, program goals, years of operation, populations served/community, program settings, major activities, and whether or not an evaluation has been conducted. A list of statewide resources for youth violence prevention programs is also provided.
