This monograph aims to provide an informational foundation for early communication programs to prevent alcohol and other drug abuse among children.
Abstract
The monograph is based on the findings of task forces that included researchers, policymakers, and prevention/intervention specialists at the national, State, and local levels. The chapters target five specific audiences, including the priority target audience, youth from high-risk environments and their families; two subgroups, including black children and Hispanic and Latino youth; and two secondary audiences, namely parents and primary care physicians. The final chapter discusses how to work with intermediary groups to reach a target audience. This strategy is particularly useful in planning communications programs. Each chapter begins with a summary page and is divided into four sections: (1) understanding the audience; (2) knowledge, attitudes, and practices; (3) planning considerations; and (4) recommendations. 31 tables and 5 appendixes
