Abstract
The techniques used by police interviewers are essential to ensuring a successful outcome to the interview. According to communications theory, there are three basic phases of the interview process: preparation, establishment of the psychological content, and the actual questioning. The author subdivides these phases and outlines empirically based recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of police-conducted interviews.
