Abstract
The text details how to use community mobilization, educational strategies, voluntarism, and the mass media to achieve significant reductions in juvenile drug use. The authors' approach emphasizes the importance of developing and strengthening protective factors, including positive bonds to family, school, and community, while reducing risk factors such as negative peer pressure and favorable attitudes toward drugs. The guidelines also explain how phases of program development can be adapted to satisfy local community needs. These phases include assessment and planning; obtaining the involvement of crucial community leaders; developing a board; and establishing, institutionalizing, and evaluating the prevention effort. Community action strategies are detailed for prenatal and infant programs, early childhood education, parent training, school organization and management, school instruction, drug and alcohol prevention curricula, community and school drug use policies, and media mobilization. Resources and strategies for funding are also described. Checklists, figures, name and subject indexes, and 209 references
