The Regional Drug Initiative (RDI), formed in December 1986 in Portland, Oregon is a task force comprised of government officials; education, law enforcement, and corrections professionals; citizen groups; treatment providers; and private business. The goals of RDI are to reduce the supply and availability of illicit drugs by supporting enforcement efforts, fostering changes in social attitudes, and increasing recovery opportunities.
Abstract
The RDI action agenda is a result of recommendations made by eight study committees charged with analyzing issues related to drug abuse in the region. The specific issue areas were offenders and drug abuse, low income populations and drug abuse, drugs in the workplace, barriers to treatment and to treatment planning for minorities and special needs populations, dual diagnosis clients, youth and drug abuse, women and drug abuse, and families and drug abuse. This 5-year program outlines specific program objectives, activities required to accomplish those objectives, first-year priorities, and proposed implementation steps. The six broad social goals are to foster and change social attitudes regarding drug use, make communities safe from drug abuse and crime, support healthier lives for citizens and families, promote a more productive work force, provide an attractive climate for economic development, and increase coordination among government, business, schools, service providers, and citizens.
