THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ACTION PLAN TO REDUCE PHARMACY HOLDUPS, UTILIZING POLICE CHECK-INS WITH PHARMACIES, IMPROVED ALARM SYSTEMS, AND INCREASED SURVEILLANCE.
Abstract
IN RESPONSE TO THE ALARMING INCREASE IN PHARMACY ARMED ROBBERIES, THE PHARMACISTS AND POLICE OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS DEVISED A PLAN WHICH WAS INITIATED IN NOVEMBER, 1972. RANDOM VISITS TO PHARMACIES BY POLICE ON A DAILY BASIS WERE INSTITUTED, AS WERE SPECIAL ALARM SYSTEMS FOR CABINETS CONTAINING CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES. PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE PHARMACIES WERE PUT UNDER SPECIAL POLICE SURVEILLANCE. EXTENSIVE MEDIA COVERAGE OF THIS PLAN COMBINED WITH THE NEW PROCEDURES RESULTED IN A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN THESE HOLDUPS.
