THIS TEXT EXAMINES THE CURRENT FEATURES OF JUVENILE AND ADULT CORRECTIONS, OUTLINES THE BASIC COMPONENTS OF A COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, AND OFFERS POSITIVE SUGGESTIONS FOR CHANGE TO COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS.
Abstract
COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMS ARE PROPOSED AND CRITICIZED ALONG WITH SUCH CONTEMPORARY CONCEPTS AS DIVERSION, ALTERNATIVES TO INCARCERATION, YOUTH ADVOCACY, YOUTH SERVICE BUREAUS, AND PROBATION AND PAROLE SERVICES. AREAS OF CONFLICT, SUCH AS SECURITY VERSUS TREATMENT, INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY VERSUS THE NEED FOR PUBLIC SAFETY, AND THE MEDICAL MODEL VERSUS THE NEWER CONCEPT OF COMMUNITY RE-INTEGRATION ARE EXPLORED AS WELL.
