REVIEW OF THE ALTERNATIVES TO DETENTION AND INCARCERATION PROVIDED BY THE BRITISH PROBATION SERVICE AND AUTHORIZED BY THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT OF 1972.
Abstract
THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT INCREASED THE POWER OF THE COURTS TO MAKE USE OF A VARIETY OF CONDITIONS TO A PROBATION ORDER, THUS REDUCING THE SITUATIONS WHICH HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN HANDLED BY REMANDING TO CUSTODY. AMONG THE NEW PROGRAMS ARE 'BAIL HOSTELS' WHICH PROVIDE NON-CUSTODIAL RESIDENCE FACILITIES FOR THOSE ON BAIL, COMMUNITY-BASED TREATMENT RESIDENTIAL HOSTELS FOR ADULT OFFENDERS, AND NON-RESIDENTIAL DAYTIME TRAINING CENTERS.
