The Northumbria Police Authority in England redefined its structure and role in January 1988 and established a new Community Crime Prevention Department (CCPD) that reflected a greater emphasis on crime prevention both by specialists and by all police officers.
Abstract
The press and public relations departments have become a section with the new department. In addition, deputy divisional commanders have assumed the responsibility for the coordination of divisional crime prevention strategies. Neighborhood Watch and multi-agency crime prevention initiatives also continue to develop and grow. During serious incidents the Casualty Bureau provides support for divisional personnel by handling the large number of telephone calls from relatives and friends. In addition, 12 adult and 8 juvenile Crime Prevention Panels have been established throughout the police force. Areas of focus for the CCPD include employment training, explosives licenses, firearms certificates, registration of intruder alarms, race relations, liaison with the schools, victim support, youth training, and the use of volunteer cadets.
