Nine articles explore the private-public partnership effort in corrections and its potential for resolving many of the current corrections dilemmas, notably the overuse of prisons and jails at a time of budget cutbacks.
Abstract
The first paper provides an overview of State community corrections acts and their efforts to link the public and private sectors in new partnerships to provide community corrections as an alternative to institutionalization. Community corrections acts typically provide statewide grants to local units of government and community agencies to develop and deliver front-end alternatives in corrections in lieu of incarceration. A second paper discusses the importance of using public education campaigns to build strong partnerships between the corrections enterprise and the community regarding support for community-based corrections. The value of using volunteers in the criminal justice system is touted in another paper, followed by an assessment of community partnerships that advocates their use in the expansion of cost-effective community-based sanctions for nonviolent offenders. Other chapters address department of corrections' work with the community to address common concerns, Oregon's Community Corrections Act, Virginia's Comprehensive Services Act for at-risk youth and their families, the Federal commitment to community corrections, and the Salvation Army's 100-year partnership with corrections.
