This issue presents new models for police discipline and community policing, advice on reducing violent crime while building trust with the community, ways to ensure a safe school environment, a partnership to address the sale of methamphetamine precursors, the distinction between “partners” and “stakeholders” in community policing, community-based homicide-prevention strategies, and outreach efforts of the Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services (COPS).
Abstract
The two new models of police discipline involve the Los Angeles Police Department and the Houston Police Department. One model offers officers opportunities to engage in something constructive rather than using suspension without pay or other traditional punitive approaches. The other model promotes an officer’s positive development by addressing the underlying cause of his/her misconduct. In the “One on One With…” feature, Commissioner Frank G. Straub of White Plains, NY, talks about various issues in community policing that remove the causes of crime by addressing the environmental and individual factors that contribute to specific criminal behaviors. An article on school safety discusses how a combination of community policing, school resource officers, and physical security can combine to ensure a safe school environment. Another article explains how “partners” and “stakeholders” serve different purposes and make distinctive contributions in community policing. Another article offers advice on how police and local leaders can better mobilize the citizenry to stop homicides in their communities. An article then describes how COPS and the National Alliance for Model State Drug Laws recently cooperated in developing more effective ways to counter the retail sales of products used to manufacture methamphetamine. An announcement of COPS’ outreach efforts focuses on the availability of representatives from COPS who will be attending several conferences and events throughout the country.
