REVIEW OF A BRITISH VOLUNTEER SERVICE WHICH PROVIDES WORKERS FOR JUVENILE INSTITUTIONS, AS WELL AS BENEFICIAL VOLUNTEER WORK FOR JUVENILE DELINQUENTS.
Abstract
THE COMMUNITY SERVICE VOLUNTEER RPOGRAM (CVS) OF BRITAIN IS DESCRIBED, ESPECIALLY IN RELATION TO ITS SERVICES IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM. YOUNG VOLUNTEERS MAY WORK IN JUVENILE INSTITUTIONS, AND THE AUTHOR STATES THAT THEIR INVOLVEMENT, PARTICULARLY THAT OF FEMALE VOLUNTEER WORKERS IN MALE JUVENILE INSTITUTIONS, HAS A POSITIVE EFFECT ON THE ATMOSPHERE IN THESE FACILITIES. AS AN EXTENSION OF THEIR PROGRAM, THE CVS ALSO TRIES TO ENGAGE JUVENILE DELINQUENTS IN VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS. FOR EXAMPLE, SUCH SERVICE CAN BE USED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO PROBATION. INSTITUTIONALIZED DELINQUENTS MAY ALSO PARTICIPATE IN VOLUNTEER WORK. BENEFITS OF THIS PROGRAM ARE AN IMPROVED SELF-IMAGE FOR THE YOUTH, VALUABLE REHABILITATIVE EFFECTS, AND IMPROVED RELATIONS WITH THE COMMUNITY IN WHICH THE FACILITY IS LOCATED. APPLICATIONS OF THIS IDEA TO AMERICAN JUVENILE INSTITUTIONS ARE DISCUSSED.
