Abstract
Crime rates and population trends are compared with national trends and with trends from selected areas of the State. Crime data were derived from Uniform Crime Reports, and population data from the State's Department of Planning and Economic Development. In summary, the rate of population growth was 16.5 percent for the 9-year period (7.0 percent nationwide), while the crime rate increased by 35.4 percent (28.6 percent nationwide), and the crime index by 57.7 percent (37.6 percent nationwide). In 1978, a total of 63,934 index crimes were reported to the State's police departments, an increase of 9.2 percent over 1977. The reported crime rates for 1977 and 1978 were 6,543.2 and 7,129.9 per 100,000 resident population, respectively. In 1978, larceny-theft constituted 61 percent of the index crimes. Violent crimes increased by 20.4 percent from 1977 to 1978, and property crimes increased by 8.8 percent during this period. Data are presented in tables, charts, and graphs.
