This article reviews comparative studies in crimiinology in Israel, using a fivefold classification especially developed for the study.
Abstract
The first category consists of theoretical studies limited exclusively to literary sources. The second category is made up of empirical studies in which comparisons are drawn with findings obtained elsewhere. In the next category are those studies in which use is made of a research instrument developed in another country. The fourth type of comparative study is that designed to test criminological theories which are or have been adhered to in other countries, such as 'culture conflict' or subcultural explanations of crime. The fifth and most developed form of comparative research is that in which hypotheses are tested by the same research team in different cultural settings. While at least one of these comparative elements is present in much of the criminological research conducted in Israel, the more sophisticated forms of comparison are relatively rare owing to the enormous budgetary and administrative problems involved in such studies. Footnotes and 41 references are included. (Author abstract modified).
