The purpose of this revised and updated publication is to provide comparative information regarding appellate courts to clerks, judges, legislators, and rulemaking bodies so that policies and procedures can be compared among States.
Abstract
The material is presented for the 50 States in alphabetical order and for the District of Columbia. The information is topically coded for convenience and identifies such major subject areas as trial courts; intermediate appellate courts; highest appellate court; jurisdiction, caseload, and staffing; rules of appellate procedure; outline of basic appellate procedures; recordkeeping; appointment of counsel in criminal appeals; and miscellanous topics. Further subdivisions of these topics are also provided in code and entered adjacent to the appropriate sections of text. Some tabular data appear in the text. Comparative summary tables are appended.
