This book provides descriptive information on four distinct but related datasets developed by Ted Robert Gurr.
Abstract
The introduction contains an essay by Gurr that describes the development of his research design and the data base. Also included is a bibliography of the author's published work followed by codebook information that covers variable description, variable format sections of each study, and a discussion of the file structure for each dataset. The uniform format for each of the four studies consists of a study description, the variable format, and a discussion of the file structure. The study on Civil Strife Events, 1955-1970 contains data on events that are variously called "internal conflict behavior," "internal war," "insurgency," or "political violence." Events included are any collective, nongovernmental attack on people or property that occurs within the boundaries of a political system. The second study -- Civil Conflict Magnitudes, 1955-1970 -- provides data on the aggregations of the strife-events data that measure the magnitude and intensity of civil conflict during 1955-70 in up to 115 countries. The third study on Conflict and Society consists of indicators of social, economic, and political conditions in 86 countries. The last study -- Polity Persistence and Change, 1800-1971 -- covers 428 polities that functioned in 144 nominally different nation states during the 19th and 20th centuries. 26-item bibliography and appended supplementary information
