This report contains statistics on crime and corrections in the province of Alberta and in Alberta municipalities, mostly for 1977-1978.
Abstract
Some of the statistics cover the years back to 1962. No court statistics are included. Sections cover police force size and budgets, police per capita, number and type of crime per 100,000 population, and percentages of change in criminal activity by type of crime. Sections dealing with individual municipalities provide demographic information, offense rates per 100,000 population, and change rates; they also compare data for individual cities with those for the entire province and compare Alberta to Canada as a whole. Data on the activities of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police K Division, provide comparison of the characteristics of offenses handled by the division with those of offenses occurring in Canada as a whole and review its involvement in each of the municipalities. The section on corrections activities covers institutional admittances and discharges, daily average population and turnover, average numbers of inmates attached to forestry camps, numbers of Indians and Metis admitted, and numbers of first and repeat offenders admitted, all by month and by institution. A section on inmates presents prisoner characteristics including age, education, marital status, habits, offenses, and sentences. Extensive tabular data and numerous graphs are provided. Appendixes include uniform crime statistics for municipalities and additional data on correctional institutions. See NCJ 77369 for a supplement to this report which includes data for 1978 and 1979.
