This booklet provides descriptive information on 16 innovative State and community traffic safety projects throughout the country.
Abstract
For each project, the booklet provides information on project characteristics, type of jurisdiction, targeted populations, program areas, jurisdiction size, problem identification, goals and objectives, strategies and activities, and results. Three of the projects described have targeted response to and prevention of impaired driving due to driver consumption of alcohol or other drugs. A Maryland program places a wrecked vehicle with accompanying safety messages at the driveway entrances of participating high schools during the prom season and summer vacation. Maine developed a project in which sober drivers are placed in a simulated situation of driving while impaired to show the dangerous effects. Colorado has used various educational tools to increase public awareness of the risk of impaired driving. Five of the projects described have had the goal of enhancing child passenger safety through education and demonstration projects. Other programs described have targeted motorcycle safety, occupant protection, pedestrian and bicycle safety, police traffic services, public information and education, school bus safety, and traffic records.
