THE EFFECTS AND USAGE OF CALIFORNIA'S GOOD SAMARITAN STATUTE ARE DESCRIBED - RESULTS OF INTERVIEWS WITH 25 OF THE 71 PERSONS WHO HAVE RECEIVED AWARDS UNDER THIS LAW ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
GOOD SAMARITAN LAWS IN OTHER JURISDICTIONS ARE SURVEYED. THE MAJORITY OF CALIFORNIA'S GOOD SAMARITANS (70 OF 71) WERE MEN. ALL BUT FOUR OF THEIR GOOD DEEDS TOOK PLACE IN THE FOUR LARGEST CITIES IN THE STATE. THE PRIMARY MOTIVATION FOR THEIR ACTIONS SEEMED TO BE ANGER TOWARD THE OFFENDER RATHER THAN COMPASSION FOR THE VICTIM. THE CALIFORNIA LAW PROVIDES ONLY FOR COMPENSATION, NOT REWARD.
