The ethical obligations of forensic psychologists in the capacity of expert witnesses are explored.
Abstract
This article sets forth the elements that contribute to competent and high-quality presentations of forensic psychologists. In large part, the discussions elaborate on the principles contained in the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct published by the American Psychological Association in 1992. The author stresses that these principles must be elaborated by an awareness of the relevant substantive literature in one's area(s) of forensic practice; the obtaining of ongoing education in one's field of practice; and the possession of sufficient education, training, or experience. Case examples are used to illustrate problems of competence and quality that sometimes accompany mental health clinicians to the witness stand. References
