Abstract
The author, a police officer, compiled the manual to promote realistic, effective communication while enhancing the user's safety when providing assistance to the public or dealing with a potentially dangerous situation. The manual is intended for use in communications between public safety personnel and non-native speakers such as people in business, foreign visitors, immigrants with language difficulties, emergency service agencies, and others. It is also intended for use by educators, trainers, staff of children's service agencies, and personnel in other public and private agencies. Individual sections present terms and phrases related to accident investigations, drug law enforcement, domestic assault, searches, arrest, missing persons, gangs, traffic law enforcement, and other topics police officers commonly encounter. It also provides general suggestions for communicating effectively with Hispanic persons and lists terms and phrases related to household items, greetings, money, health and medicine, relatives, occupations, and other topics.
