This manual provides key words and phrases in Spanish that can help law enforcement officers and other emergency personnel who need to communicate with Hispanics under urgent and stressful conditions. The Oregon Board on Public Safety Standards and Training has certified the course of instruction that accompanies this manual.
Abstract
Each phrase contained in the manual has the Spanish equivalent as well as transliterations; the manual also contains basic Spanish grammatical rules and constructions. Some of the subjects and situations covered in this manual are child abuse, advice of rights, commands, consent to search, various crimes, drug slang, interviews with suspects and victims, arrest procedures, officer safety, and witnesses. Other topics listed in the manual have cultural relevance to Hispanics: greetings, patron saints, friends and associates, and Mexican-American family values.
