The compound system in Northern Ireland is a penal arrangement for 'special category status' prisoners.
Abstract
Its introduction occurred in an emergency to relieve prison pressure. The physical and social arrangements of the compound system of imprisonment are described. Its many advantages over conventional imprisonment lead the writer to argue for its consideration as a more generally available penal alternative. (Author abstract)
