Annotation

In 1983, the National Black Alcoholism Council initiated a campaign called Blacks Against Drunk Driving (BADD), targeted to the black community and focusing on drunk driving.

Abstract

BADD aims to reduce the incidence of drunk driving among the black population and to focus specifically on black youths aged 15 to 24. The program will provide culturally specific training and education for the crucial staff in law enforcement and the judicial system who are the most likely to approach, arrest, or provide other services for black persons who drive while intoxicated. Both the black community and law enforcement personnel need to try to overcome their communication gap. The overall effort will also involve the black community in the campaign against drunk driving through community education networking conferences. The black community must recognize alcohol's involvement in too many deaths, injuries, and illnesses and must join with others to educate young people and prevent drug abuse. 12 references.
