This article briefly describes the law enforcement COMPSTAT technique in addressing the challenge in institutional juvenile assaults, and how the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections has taken the COMPSTAT technique and applied it to juvenile corrections.
Abstract
The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) COMPSTAT program was initiated in June 2007 with assault rates declining after implementation. The heart and soul of the ADJC COMPSTAT program is the proactive and cross-disciplinary approach toward the management of violence and real-time data. The COMPSTAT technique includes: mission clarification, internal accountability, geographic organization of operational command, data driven identification of problems and assessment of the department’s problem-solving efforts, organizational flexibility, innovative problem-solving tactics, and external information exchange. Assaults and fights frequently result in injuries to juveniles or staff, disrupt the smooth functioning of a correctional facility, upset the treatment environment, and can result in costly medical expenses. Many juvenile correctional agencies across the country struggle with the challenge of institutional violence. This article describes how one such juvenile correctional agency is addressing the challenge posed by juvenile assaults through the adaptation of the COMPSTAT technique. References
