A computer software program known as RattsBASE (RB) has been developed for all forensic pathology units in Sweden, and corresponding software known as ToxBASE (TB) has been developed for the Department of Forensic Toxicology where all forensic toxicology in Sweden is managed.
Abstract
Both databases have been created using dBASE IV, and the programming has been carried out according to specifications of staff at forensic toxicology and forensic pathology units. The purpose of both systems is to automate the offices and enable the compilation of detailed statistics. The installation of Novell Netware and Integrated Service Digital Network connections has enabled rapid communication between forensic toxicology and forensic pathology units and easy compilation of nationwide statistics. The RB and TB systems offer a wide spectrum of reports and include a simple module for evaluating the importance of forensic efforts associated with death investigations. The software configuration allows the processing of a large amount of related toxicological and autopsy data that, in turn, yield a base for compiling toxicology interpretation lists. Features of the software and its benefits and limitations are described. 10 references, 1 table, and 4 figures
