Abstract
Hacking and its jargon are described, and the accidental and malicious damage caused by hackers is discussed and illustrated in cases involving (1) illegal access to computer files of large companies and organizations and (2) various forms of fraud and theft. Legal and illegal uses of computer bulletin board systems are described. Ways in which teenaged computer enthusiasts have helped prevent future hacking-related crimes by drawing attention to security deficiencies are noted. The enormous costs of computer software piracy also are discussed. Security measures, such as biometric locks, that prevent unauthorized access to computer software and physical security measures for hardware are described. Finally, laws related to computer security and privacy, their enforcement, and the justice system's response to computer crime are reviewed. A list of information resources is appended. Glossary and index.
