NATIONAL TRENDS IN THE USE OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY FOR LEGAL RESEARCH AND MECHANIZATION OF CLERICAL TASKS ARE REVIEWED, AND A SURVEY OF COURT COMPUTER USE IN CALIFORNIA IS PROVIDED.
Abstract
TWO AREAS OF COMPUTER USAGE IN THE LAW ARE REVEWED: LEGISLATIVE BILL CONTROL AND PRINTING BY COMPUTERS, AND COMPUTER STORAGE OF CASE MATERIALS FOR LEGAL RESEARCH. THE EXTENSIVE USE OF COMPUTERS IN TRAFFIC COURTS AND FOR THE RECRUITING, SUMMONING AND PAYING OF JURORS IS DESCRIBED. OTHER COURT COMPUTER USES SUCH AS THE MAINTENANCE OF CASE NAME INDICES AND CASE HISTORIES, COURT CALENDARING, ANALYZING CRIMINAL AND COURT STATISTICS, AND DOING ALL FINE, FEE, AND BOND ACCOUNTING ARE DISCUSSED AS WELL. THE CALIFORNIA SURVEY SHOWER THAT MUNICIPAL COURTS WERE MAKING FAR MORE EXTENSIVE USE OF DATA PROCESSING THAN THE SUPERIOR COURTS, AND THAT THE PREPARATION OF JURY PANEL LISTS AND JURY NOTICES CONSTITUTED THE MOST EXTENSIVE USE OF AUTOMATIC EQUIPMENT IN 1969.
