Based on research conducted in Moscow, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, from November 1987 through June 1988, this volume describes the role and functions of the "advokaty" -- the practicing attorneys who advise citizens in the Soviet Union of their rights and defend their interests in court.
Abstract
The discussion also focuses on the Soviet justice system, law practice, and the current status of law reform as a result of Gorbachev's efforts. In addition, it follows a criminal defense lawyer through a homicide case. To gather data, the author observed members of the local bar organization, the Moscow City College of Advocates, as they took part in 92 legal consultations with clients in one law office and represented citizens in 15 courtroom proceedings. He interviewed dozens of lawyers, as well as judges and prosecutors. The research also used information from press materials and legal journals.
