This report summarizes information obtained by the Department of Justice relating to offenders charged with felony weapons possession in California for fiscal year 2002.
Abstract
Assembly Bill 491 amended the Penal Code relating to criminal charges for carrying a concealed or loaded firearm in California. Carrying a concealed weapon without being registered with the Department of Justice (DOJ) is a felony offense, as is possessing a firearm and unexpended ammunition without being registered with the DOJ and carrying a loaded firearm on his/her person or in a vehicle without being registered with the DOJ. Assembly Bill 491 also requires the Attorney General of California to report information about the race, ethnicity, age, and gender of those charged with felony possession. This report presents information collected from the California Attorney General for fiscal year 2002, which comprises the time from July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2002. The data pertain only to information relating to the requirements of Penal Code sections 12025 and 12031. Data is presented in narrative form, in tables, and in charts. Of those charged with felony possession, 94.3 percent were male, 23.7 percent were Black, and 48.5 percent were aged 18 to 24. Detailed data in this report is displayed by the level of offense, gender, race/ethnicity, age group, and additional charges.
