Research on aggression is examined in terms of the different terminology used in studies of aggression and violence, the theoretical approaches used, and the role of naturalistic methods of research on aggression.
Abstract
The terms aggression, violence, and disruption have all been widely used in the behavioral sciences and have different connotations with respect to intent, damage, emotions involved, and social consequences. Some theories of aggression focus on the individual, while others are more social and interactive in approach. The interactive approaches include theories that emphasize the importance of social structural factors, the exchange theory of Goode, and the general systems approach of Straus. Naturalistic approaches fall between the individual psychological and the broader societal levels of analysis. Figures, tables, overview of remaining papers in the book, and 75 references.
