EXPLORING ACTUAL STREET CRIME SITUATIONS, THIS TRAINING MANUAL USES THE CASE STUDY METHOD TO INTRODUCE NEW POLICE OFFICERS TO THE VARIABLES PRESENT IN STREET CONFRONTATIONS AND INTERVENTIONS.
Abstract
FIVE CASE STUDY VIGNETTES OF SIMULATED ACTUAL STREET OCCURENCES WITH YOUNG ADULTS ARE OUTLINED. EACH REQUIRES STUDENT PARTICIPATION TO WORK TOWARD A SOLUTION IN A GROUP SETTING. EACH GROUP MUST SOLVE THE PROBLEM PRESENTED AND PRESENT ITS FINDINGS TO THE CLASS. A DEBRIEFING BY THE TRAINER INSURES THAT ALL DATA HAVE BEEN COVERED. SINCE IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT A NEW OFFICER REALIZE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN STREET GANGS AND GROUPS, THE MANUAL GIVES DATA CULLED FROM AUTHORITATIVE TEXTS ON THE SOCIALIZATION PROCESS OF YOUTH. THE DISCUSSION CENTERS ON GANGS AND WHY THEY EMERGE; THE YOUTH GANG; GANG CLASSIFICATIONS (FIGHTING, DELINQUENT, MARGINAL); GANG MAKEUP; AND THE THREE TYPES OF GANGS (GHETTO, DEFENSIVE, ADVENTUROUS). YOUTH GROUPS ARE DEFINED AND CLASSIFIED INTO STREET CORNER GROUPS, SOCIAL OR CELLAR CLUBS, AND SOCIO-POLITICAL ACTION CLUBS. THE LABELING APPROACH IS ANALYZED AND SOCIAL LABELS DELINEATED. POIN6TERS USEFUL FOR POLICE OFFICERS IN HANDLING YOUTH PROBLEMS ARE DESCRIBED, AND A LIST IS GIVEN OF THE TYPES OF CRIME AND AGE GROUPING OF ARRESTS TO ACQUAINT NEW OFFICERS WITH THE MAGNITUDE OF THE CRIME PROBLEMS INVOLVING YOUNG ADULTS. CHARTS ARE INCLUDED. (MJW)
