This resource guide aims to provide teachers with materials to teach elementary students the basic concepts and skills necessary for effective problem-solving and decision-making.
Abstract
The manual introduces the reader to conflict management and provides practical, age-appropriate, and easy-to-use materials for teaching skills and implementing process for the prevention and nonviolent resolution of conflicts. The guide reflects the belief that more than one appropriate way exists to teach conflict management. Thus, individual are encouraged to select materials that are most suited to their schools. The materials are appropriate for use in rural, suburban, and urban schools. An introduction provides an overview of conflict management, explains the importance of a comprehensive program, and presents a glossary of conflict management terms. A section on enhancing students' conflict management knowledge and skills focuses on understanding conflict, understanding how emotions influence conflict, improving communication skills, reaching resolution, the use of conflict management as a classroom management tool, and the relationship of conflict management and academics. Further sections present teacher resources for skill enhancement, articles for teachers, a bibliography of conflict management materials, a list of Ohio Conflict Management Resource Centers, resources for peer mediation program planning, resources for complementary programs, and materials for parents.
