This curriculum is designed to help secondary students better understand and resolve the conflicts they encounter at school, at home, and in the community.
Abstract
It focuses on five areas: (1) helps students define conflict, identifies common social messages about conflict, and reviews major conflict types; (2) considers basic conflict resolution styles and the effectiveness of each; (3) describes the communication process and factors that influence it; (4) provides skill building in positive communication behaviors; and (5) provides practice in an informal, collaborative conflict resolution process and describes the spectrum of third-party processes. Each chapter of the curriculum contains teacher background information and a series of activities. The activities can be used as part of a specialized course on conflict resolution or they can be integrated into Social Studies, English, or Family Life Education. The activities focus on prejudice, values, and differences in perceptions between people. Appendixes provide further information on values implicit in teaching conflict resolution to students, services for educators, and role playing. A bibliography is included.
