This newsletter presents articles about a forthcoming United Nations Meeting on criminal justice, the Federal Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, research on juvenile delinquency factors, and other topics.
Abstract
The Ninth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders will be held in Cairo, Egypt, in April and May 1995 and will focus on four themes. The new Federal law will provide for new police officers, prisons, and crime prevention programs. A Canadian study of gender, family-class structure, and juvenile delinquency concluded that the data do not support the major propositions of power-control theory and indicate the importance of both peers in causing crime and delinquency and parental instrumental controls in preventing juvenile delinquency. Other articles focused on the effectiveness of shock incarceration programs in the United States, privatization in the British corrections system, and the Alternatives to Violence Program in New South Wales, Australia.
