FUNDS AWARDED TO THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT BY LEAA FROM 1968 TO 1978 ARE DETAILED, ACCOMPANIED BY AN OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMS FUNDED FROM 1969 THROUGH 1977 AND GRANTS AWARDED FROM 1976 TO 1977.
Abstract
ESTABLISHED BY THE GOVERNOR IN 1968, THE CONNECTICUT JUSTICE COMMISSION ADMINISTERS THE BLOCK GRANTS PROVIDED BY LEAA AND AUDITS AND EVALUATES A PERCENTAGE OF THE PROJECTS. OVER NEARLY A DECADE THE CONNECTICUT JUSTICE COMMISSION HAS AWARDED MORE THAN $53 MILLION IN 1,515 LEAA GRANTS TO PROJECTS IN EVERY PHASE OF CRIMINAL AND JUVENILE JUSTICE. THE STATE'S JUSTICE SYSTEM HAS SEEN A VARIETY OF MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS AND SIGNIFICANT INNOVATIONS AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THESE EFFORTS. MAJOR SUCCESSES NOTED ARE THE POLICE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT/CRIME DETERRENCE PROGRAMS AND COMMUNITY YOUTH SERVICES SYSTEMS. UNIFICATION, STREAMLINING, AND INCREASING TECHNICAL SOPHISTICATION HAVE OCCURRED IN THE AREAS OF COURTS, CORRECTIONS, AND INFORMATION AND RADIO SYSTEMS. FOR SEPTEMBER 1976 - SEPTEMBER 1977 IN THE ADULT CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, 15 GRANTS WENT TO COURT PROGRAMS, 12 TO POLICE OPERATIONS, 14 TO CORRECTIONS PROJECTS, 5 TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM RESOURCES MANPOWER AND TRAINING, AND 16 TO COMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS. IN THE AREA OF THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM, 59 GRANTS WENT TO ALL PHASES OF WORK WITH JUVENILES. TWELVE DISCRETIONARY GRANTS WERE AWARDED BY LEAA TO FUND PROJECTS IN KEY PROBLEM AREAS AND TO SUPPORT PROGRAMS TO REDUCE CRIME AND MAKE IMPROVEMENTS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM WITH NATIONAL IMPLICATIONS.
