Organized crime is actively involved in the various types of crimes in Australia.
Abstract
Police phone taps in New South Wales have exposed the entire spectrum of organized crime, including shoplifting, drug trafficking, corruption of public officials, arson, immigration rackets, tax fraud, and illegal gambling. Wire taps, used to reveal illegal gambling, provide evidence to illustrate the inner workings of organized crime. Australian organized crime sponsors the operations of 'kangaroo gangs,' shoplifting teams that travel throughout the world to shoplift goods for fencing through organized crime networks. Australian organized crime also smuggles protected species of Australian wildlife, including birds, reptiles, the koala, and kangaroo. Other endeavors in which organized crime is active are horse-race fixing, money laundering, loansharking, murder, and racketeering in communications unions (telephone and postal). Subject index.
