VARIOUS TYPES OF SECURITY LIGHTING ARE EXAMINED IN THIS ARTICLE WHICH CONSIDERS BOTH THEIR FUNCTION AND USE AND THEIR OVERALL BENEFITS IN TERMS OF EFFICIENCY AND VISIBILITY.
Abstract
SECURITY LIGHTING CAN BE SELECTED FROM AMONG THESE MAJOR LIGHTING SOURCES: THE INCANDESCENT LAMP, THE MERCURY VAPOR LIGHT, THE SODIUM VAPOR LIGHT, AND THE METAL HALIDE LAMPS. THE MAJORITY OF SECURITY APPLICATIONS WOULD BE FOUND IN THE HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE CLASS OF LIGHTING, WHICH DOES NOT INCLUDE THE INCANDESCENT LAMP. MERCURY VAPOR LAMPS, SUITABLE FOR STREET LIGHTING AND OUTDOOR USE IN PARKING LOTS, RECREATION AREAS, ETC., HAVE EXPERIENCED A HIGH LEVEL OF USE IN SECURITY APPLICATIONS. THE ULTIMATE QUESTION FOR SECURITY LIGHTING COMES DOWN TO EFFECTIVE VISIBILITY VS. COST. HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM LIGHTING (HPS) HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE MOST EFFICIENT, LEAST EXPENSIVE WAY TO LIGHT A STORAGE AREA, AND LUMINAIRE STYLES ARE AVAILABLE WITH A SELECTION OF BEAM SPREADS TO SUIT ANY WIDTH OR HEIGHT. LOW PRESSURE SODIUM LIGHTING (LPS), RECENTLY PERFECTED, OFFERS GREATEST EFFICIENCY OF ALL AND IS THE FIRST TO BE ISOLATED SPECIFICALLY AS SECURITY LIGHTING. IT CAN BE USED AT NIGHT TO LIGHT RETAIL STORES ON A RATIO OF ONE 55-WATT LPS LAMP TO 3000-5000 SQUARE FEET OF STORE COVERAGE. FURTHERMORE, LPS IS ADVANTAGEOUS AS OFF-HOURS LIGHTING, SINCE ITS AMBER COLOR INDICATES THAT LEGITIMATE PERSONS ARE NOT IN THE BUILDING. METAL HALIDE LIGHTING, THE CLEANEST LIGHT WITH RESPECT TO COLOR, IS HIGHLY INTENSE AND PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE FOR LIGHTING NIGHT SPORTING EVENTS. INFORMATION ON THE FUNCTIONAL ELEMENTS OF EACH OF THESE TYPES OF LIGHTING ARE DESCRIBED AND DIAGRAMED.
